The types of VPN available include the L2TP/IPSec, IPSec, and the PPTP, which range from most to least secure. Do note that PPTP VPN is no longer supported by Apple computers running iOS 10 or higher.Follow these guidelines to set up a VPN service on your router. Though these guidelines are for a Netgear router, most of the basic steps will be similar for other brands of routers.

  • Step 1:First, you need to enable DDNS on your router.
  • Step 2:Make sure that the router is connected to your computer via an Ethernet cable.
  • Step 3:Go to the computer’s desktop. Press the key with the Windows icon on the lower-left hand side of the keyboard. The Start menu is launched. Type ‘cmd’ without these quotes and press Enter.
  • Step 4:The ‘Command Prompt’ window appears. Enter ‘ipconfig /all’ and press Enter.
  • Step 5:When the IP list loads, scroll down to the ‘default gateway’ field and copy its contents. Paste this in the browser’s address bar and press Enter.
  • Step 6:The router authentication window appears. Key in the router’s username and password. Click Log in. (By default, the username and password are ‘admin’ and ‘password.’ In some router brands, you need to leave the password field empty.)
  • Step 7:Go to Advanced Advanced Setup Dynamic DNS Click the ‘Use a Dynamic DNS Service’ checkbox Click the 'No' radio button if you do not have a DDNS account Select Netgear from the drop-down list Type ‘NetgearDDNS’ as the hostname Enter the details requested, such as hostname, email, and password Click Register OK Follow the actions mentioned in the Netgear email that is sent to your inbox to activate the account. DDNS is now enabled.</li>
  • Step 8:Click Advanced Advanced Setup VPN Service (This path may vary for different brands of routers.)

  • Step 9:Click the Enable VPN checkbox Click Apply. Set the VPN settings here.
  • Step 10:Click ‘For Windows’ and wait until the OpenVPN configuration files are downloaded. Go to the OpenVPN official ‘Downloads’ page and download the OpenVPN client on your computer. Once the OpenVPN client installer is downloaded, right-click and run the Open VPN client installer as an administrator and click Next I Agree Next Browse Set the OpenVPN destination folder Click Install Finish. 
  • Step 11:Navigate to the OpenVPN configuration files that you downloaded earlier and extract them to the same location as the OpenVPN client. 
  • Step 12:Go to Control Panel Network and Sharing Center Change adapter settings Go to the local area connection list click the connection name that has the device name ‘TAP-Windows Adapter’ Rename the connection as Netgear-VPN. You can now use the VPN service on your router.
