How To Set Up a Router As a Switch

A Wi-Fi router can be set up as a switch if you wish to connect multiple devices at the same time.

Carry out these steps to execute the setup:

  • Step 1:Connect the Wi-Fi router to the electrical outlet using a power cord.
  • Step 2:Before setting up the Wi-Fi router as a switch, you have to reset it to the factory default settings.
  • Step 3:Long press the Reset button for thirty seconds to reset the Wi-Fi router.
  • Step 4:Plug a crossover cable between the LAN port of the main internet router and switch-router.
  • Step 5:Make sure not to connect any cable to the WAN port of the switch-router.
  • Step 6:If you have a DSL or satellite internet connection, configure the router using the CD that came with the Wi-Fi router package for appropriate authentication.
  • Step 7:Disable Wi-Fi on your computer. Connect the computer to the router.
  • Step 8:Open the default web browser and type the IP address of the Wi-Fi router in the URL. You can refer to the backside of the Wi-Fi router box to identify the IP address.
  • Step 9:Enter the default login in credentials on the Sign-in page.
  • Step 10:Change the switch router's IP address by navigating to the Home or Setup menu.
  • Step 11:Disable the DHCP server because the switch-router cannot function if the DHCP Server is enabled.
  • Step 12:Also, change the Gateway mode to Router mode for the switch-router to function.
  • Step 13:Disable Wireless broadcast and Firewall protection on the switch-router.
  • Step 14:After completing the settings, save the changes and close the configuration page.
  • Step 15:Now, the Wi-Fi router is changed into a switch-router completely with an internet connection.
