How To Set Up A Second Router As An Access Point?

The only difference between a router and an access point is, the access point acts as a port to get connected to the devices that are outside the wireless coverage of the router and to connect more devices to the network. Setting up a secondary router as an access point is similar to that of setting up the secondary router as an extender.

Now, let’s look into the steps on how to set up a second router as an access point. Note: The steps explained here are suitable for Tp-Link routers.

  • Step 1:Check whether the primary router has been set up properly.
  • Step 2:If possible, reset the secondary router (Tp-Link) before the setup.
  • Step 3:Connect the secondary router to your computer using an Ethernet cable.
  • Step 4:Open a web browser on the computer and go to the web-based setup page of the router.
  • Step 5:Enter the router credentials in the respective fields to log in. The default credentials are:
  • Step 6:Username- admin
  • Step 7:Password- password
  • Step 8:Once done, the TP-Link router’s web-based setup page will open.
  • Step 9:On the left side of the router interface, click the Network tab.
  • Step 10:Click LAN and change the LAN IP address of the router. Make sure the IP address is within the range of the primary router.
  • Step 11:Once you change the LAN IP address, you will have to reboot the router and again log in to the setup page.
  • Step 12:Click the Wireless tab, select Wireless Settings, and change the SSID.
  • Step 13:Use the recommended security option --- WPA/WPA2- Personal (Recommended).
  • Step 14:Set a password for the network.
  • Step 15:Select WPA2-PSK as the security type.
  • Step 16:Select the AES as the Encryption type and click the Save button.
  • Step 17:Click the DHCP option on the left pane of the TP-Link router page.
  • Step 18:Click the Disable radio button for the DHCP Server option.
  • Step 19:Click the Save button.
  • Step 20:Now go to the System Tools option on the left pane.
  • Step 21:Select the Reboot option and click the Reboot button.
